We chat with HonorSociety director Oran Zegman about setting the tone of the paramountplus film and the creative decision to break the fourth wall:
Currently available to stream on Paramount+, Honor Society follows high school senior, Honor, who is determined to be in charge of her own fate and finds herself panicked when her intricately crafted plan to get into Harvard begins to fall through. Realizing her spot at the college isn't as secure as she thought, Honor enacts a new scheme to take her competition out of the running. Yet, Honor doesn't expect to become friends with her rivals, let alone fall for her biggest foe.
And with her, I really felt like both of us coming from—she's coming from a small town, and I'm coming from the very small country of Israel—both of us stop at nothing to get what we want, and focus on our goals without being apologetic. Which sometimes comes off as"too strong" in our society, but no one will ever say it about a man. Oran Zegman: I really love the theme of the movie. I think it's what really drew me to wanting to make it.
No one really knows her, and she's living her whole façade life. We actually built the whole arc and whole emotional arc for the camera. In the beginning, the camera is just there all the time and it's kind of like her best friend; wanting to know everything; ready to take in anything that owner gives her.
Oran Zegman: It was not easy. I love merging tones. And, you know, it's really the hardest thing in the world to keep the tone and make sure that everyone is on the same page all the time and everyone understands what exactly the tone is. Because if you don't keep the tone, it easily can flip the key. Or it can be just like, you know, like, not deep enough or not dark enough.
Screen Rant: You did, you absolutely did. I'm a big fan of dramedies—dramas and comedies—you know, so that was another thing I loved. I recognized Angourie from a couple of different films and I thought she did a phenomenal job portraying Honor and all the different sides to her. What was it like working together to bring this character to life?
