Emergency Medical Services brought the victims to Bellevue Hospital within minutes, according to a briefing fromThe attack took place at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon after the perpetrator—a regular at the museum—was denied entrance because his membership had been revoked after two separate incidents of disorderly conduct there in recent days, the police said. He had received a letter about the revocation one day earlier.

Police are aware of the identity of the individual, a white man wearing a blue surgical mask who was reportedly there to attend a film screening. He is not yet in custody and was recorded on video leaving the museum after the incident. The crowds viewing the Sophie Taeuber Arp exhibition were confused, dragging their feet as they craned their necks to get one last look at the artist’s tapestries and marionettes. As the public exited the show and approached the stairs, some were scanning social media for news of what had happened. By the time Artnet News got outside and circled back to 53rd Street, an ambulance was speeding away.
