Disney CEO Bob Chapek has raised hopes for potential future Encanto projects after referring to the studio's latest animated hit as 'the launch of a new franchise' in a new fiscal report.👀🙌

Following the success of Disney’s Encanto, there may be a possibility for a franchise. The latest animated Disney film has quickly garnered social media attention for its viral original songs, such as “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure,” with the original songs and score being written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Germaine Franco.

The latest animated Disney film follows the story of the Madrigals, who reside in the hidden mountains of Columbia in a magical house, exploring deeper themes of intergenerational trauma and bringing on-screen representation for Colombian culture. The animated feature film has also received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Score, Best Animated Feature, and Best Song for “Dos Oruguitas.

“We’ve had a very strong start to the fiscal year, with a significant rise in earnings per share, record revenue and operating income at our domestic parks and resorts, the launch of a new franchise with Encanto, and a significant increase in total subscriptions across our streaming portfolio to 196.4 million, including 11.8 million Disney+ subscribers added in the first quarter...”

As Encanto continues to rise in popularity and triumph in the charts, it is unsurprising that Disney is eager to build on the feature film. Recently, Miranda disclosed his interest in possibly transitioning Encanto onto Broadway, sharing that he already has ideas for how the film's finale number might play out in a stage version. Although Encanto received a theatrical release before heading to Disney+, it may encourage the studio to push more feature films onto its streaming service.

Encanto shattered the Disney+ platform, accounting for over 407 million minutes in the US during its first weekend on the streaming service. While official plans for new Encanto projects have not been confirmed as of yet, there may be some underway in the near future as Chapek has touted the film as a the beginning of a new saga.
