Rayburn’s Rivera pulls away for 22-6A title in 3200-meter run

Deer Park's Kayleigh Dyson is about to bring the bar down on one of her attempts at 4-8 during high jump competition on the opening day of the district track and field meet. It concludes Thursday night at 6.For Sam Rayburn distance runner Jonathan Rivera, it was a pretty sub-par time. But on the up side, he planned it to be a sub-par reading, knowing stronger efforts will be needed down the road.

How far off was the Lamar University-bound runner’s 3200-meter time from his PR this season? By over 40 seconds worth. But with plenty in the gas tank for that eighth lap, he rocketed to the finish line. For the girls, it was the Dobie duo of Victoria Ramirez coasting to the 22-6A title with the time of 12:36.47, followed by teammate Isabella Padilla and her 12:54.74. Then it was the Deer Park tandem of Peyton Collier and Kaydence Creel securing third and fourth with times of 12:56.49 and 13:03.05, respectively.

For the guys, Channelview’s Mar’Kavion Morgan earned the district title at 6-4, followed by Memorial’s Corey Johnson, Deer Park’s Nick Buffalo and Channelview’s Keith Marshall. Action in the long jump had Dobie’s Natalie Onozie bagging top honors with a leap of 16 feet, 9 inches. Channelview’s Nyena Carter was next at 16-4. In third was South Houston’s Dasia Prince and fourth went to Deer Park freshman Ryee Endsley.
