LA has something of a good problem?
Your 3-2 Los Angeles Lakers have had a slightly uneven start to their 2023-24 NBA season. They've won those three contests by an average of 4.3 points per. Their offense, despite adding a bunch of shooters this summer , is fully middle-of-the-pack thus far, as the team ranks just 18th in offensive rating. And its much-ballyhooed defense isn't even actually in the top 10 yet this year .
Although it looked like LA had added some really intriguing players via free agency over the summer, head coach Darvin Ham made some strange rotational choices early .Ham's decision to play former lottery pick-turned-borderline draft bust swingman Cam Reddish over second-year 3-and-D shooting guard Max Christie has been kind of baffling to yours truly.
Although he's hurt right now, power forward Rui Hachimura, who inked a three-year, $51 million deal as a restricted free agent over the summer, seemed to have been doubly passed over for major minutes. First, he was booted from what I figured would be his role to lose in LA's starting lineup in favor of just-signed combo forward Taurean Prince . But it didn't stop there.
The Lakers finally looked pretty good against the Clippers in a 130-125 overtime victory Wednesday -- and that was due in part to their trotting out an eight-man rotation, something that was pretty much mandated by some key injury absences.There are 11 players who can make a legitimate claim to earning a rotation spot, but realistically during a season, the ideal rotation is probably going to be nine guys with an occasional injury-induced floater. Not everyone can be sated.
