MLB has backtracked after initially saying the Dodgers clinched a playoff spot, saying Monday that because of three- and four-way tiebreakers, L.A. still needs one more win (or one more Milwaukee Brewers loss) to officially punch its ticket.
Though Major League Baseball had initially recognized the Dodgerswith their 11-2 rout of the San Diego Padres on Sunday — with playoff hats being passed out in the clubhouse, a congratulatory tweet from MLB’s official account and an “X” being briefly placed next to their name in the official online standings — the league had to backtrack on Monday because there are still three- and four-way tiebreakers that still exist.
From the start of April to June 28, the 37-year-old was batting just .217. He had a dismal OPS of .634 and just four home runs. And though he had 38 RBIs, there was speculation his best years had finally passed him by. “There’s a lot of stuff that goes into hitting, so it’s hard to put your finger on one thing,” he said. “But just at-bats, confidence and results, kind of helped feed that.”
Justin Turner runs the bases after hitting a solo home run off Padres’ Joe Musgrove in the fifth inning Sunday in San Diego. Musgrove said: “I don’t know why everyone is making such a big deal out of it.” He tried to clarify that he only meant he didn’t view Turner as the biggest threat in a Dodgers lineup littered with other All-Stars and former MVPs.
Perhaps more importantly, the outfielder only struck out twice in three games, a positive sign coming off a 13 for 83 stretch that had 38 strikeouts in his previous 25 games.
