The aviation agency said that it was working to restore its Notice to Air Missions system, which issues early warning notifications to pilots, after it malfunctioned Wednesday morning.that flights were resuming at Newark Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and that departures at other airports were expected to resume at 9 a.m.Flight tracking website FlightAware reported 2,512 delays just before 8 a.m. in the U.S.

Alana Calmi, a spokesperson for the New York and New Jersey Port Authority, confirmed the outage caused issues at Newark Airport, JFK and LaGuardia, though she stressed it was a nationwide outage. The FAA tells Gothamist that it is working to restore its alert system, which provides internal safety information to flights and airport personnel.Steve Chiavarone, 39, who was supposed to board a 6:30 a.m. flight from Newark Airport headed to Atlanta, said right before boarding someone from United Airlines came out and explained the situation.“Restaurants are open, bathrooms are available, so it’s not as bad as it could be,” he said, adding the airline was offering free snacks and water.

When he arrived at the airport it was relatively quiet, but as delays pile up the terminal was getting busier, Chiavrone said.
