'Air Coryell' architect joins Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor following decades of debate
Thirty-seven years after his final NFL game leading the San Diego Chargers and 13 years after his death in La Mesa at age 85, the innovative coach whose offenses exhilarated thousands of San Diegans was announced Thursday night as a Class of 2023 member.
Coryell led the transformation of the Chargers into one of the NFL’s most exciting teams, more so in the first half of his tenure. His entertaining SDSU teams dazzled the likes of future Super Bowl-winning coordinator Mike Martz, a student and tight end at Madison High. They compiled a 104-19-2 record. Midway into Coryell’s galvanizing run with the football Aztecs, San Diegans decided to invest heavily in football.
“I certainly hope I’m worth it,” the 53-year-old coach said of the third round pick. “I’m pleased with the opportunity to coach again in San Diego because it’s like a dream come true.” That none of Coryell’s 14 teams reached a Super Bowl was cited by some Hall voters as reason to exclude him in previous years.
