The White House underscored the Justice Department's independence after a grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump as part of special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

"We would refer you to the Justice Department, which conducts its criminal investigations independently," White House Counsel's Office spokesman Ian Sams told the Washington Examiner.Trump was indicted on one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, one count of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, one count of obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and one conspiracy against rights.

Trump's campaign has criticized the federal indictment, his second after the classified documents investigation, as"election interference," asking why Smith waited"two and a half years to bring these fake charges.""Why was it announced the day after the big Crooked Joe Biden scandal broke out from the Halls of Congress?" the campaign said.

Trump has been summoned to appear in Washington, D.C., federal court this Friday for his arrest and arraignment. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is on vacation for the week in Lewes, Delaware.
