At the 2011 Conservative Political Acton Conference, Donald Trump first flirted with a run for president; but he also suggested that a businessman like him might be haunted by his past; he got that right

Donald Trump looks on as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis speaks during a rally in Florida in 2019. Now they are likely competitors for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Donald Trump is not the kind of guy who’s prone to reflection. But if he were, he would profit by looking back at the speech he made to the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2011.

He was a relatively youthful 64 and this represented his first flirtation with the presidency. Trump told the audience that if he decided to run in 2012 he would have little trouble getting elected. He offered the example of then-president Barack Obama.
