Send your well wishes to the longtime Browns analyst and lineman. At 72, health problems are leading Dieken to step away from the radio booth.
That’s what Doug Dieken said Tuesday about his retirement as the Browns radio broadcaster, a job he’s had since 1985. His last game will be Sunday when the Browns host Cincinnati at First Energy Stadium.
“I’m going to walk away from the press box while I can still walk away from the press box,” said Dieken. “Health-wise, it’s been tough for me lately.” “My brother had four open-heart surgeries,” said Dieken. “My heart would flutter. It’s A-Fib . My heart rate was 149 at one point. “When they called me on draft day and started talking about playing tackle, I wondered if they had the right guy,” he said. Dieken was behind Dick Schafrath, not making his first start until Nov. 12, 1971. His final start was Dec. 16, 1984. He never missed a game, 203 consecutive starts.“I believe it’s the longest consecutive game streak for anyone at left tackle,” said Dieken. As a former player and radio broadcaster, Dieken is unique. His approach is much like that of a left tackle.
