Opinion: Doug McIntyre: Are Angelenos getting the best government money can buy?
Federal, state, county and municipal employees rightly have measures of indemnification. If the garbage man was held personally responsible for damages for every fender bender nobody would apply for the job. But what if the garbage man is driving his truck while drunk? Well, the city gets sued even though drunk driving is a criminal act and obviously forbidden by Sanitation Department rules.
It’s hardly news that the government wastes money and is a fat target for lawsuits, many of which are admittedly dubious. Juries frequently play Santa Claus with “government money” forgetting “government money” is their money. And yours. And mine. In 2012, Huizar plowed his city-owned SUV into David Ceja, a former Huntington Park police officer waiting at a red light. The accident happened in the wee small hours of the morning. You know, the time when people come home from saloons. The councilman was not given a breathalyzer test for more than 2 hours. A professional courtesy?
