Lesha Adams was fatally struck by a 20-year-old driver Saturday, March 30, 2019 while helping a wheelchair-bound man cross the street in the Heights.A driver arrested after the March 2019 death of two pedestrians — a man in a wheelchair and the good Samaritan who tried helping him cross a busy Heights street — has been acquitted by a Harris County jury, court records show.
Lesha Adams, 55, was driving home at night with her daughters, ages 13 and 10, when she nearly struck Jesus Pérez, 63, as he crossed the dimly-lit street in his wheelchair.Both died when Mimms hit the two on the road. Police accused Mimms of fleeing the scene and returning 30 minutes later. The prosecutors argued in trial that Mimms returned to the scene after 18 minutes.Mimms was driving to her grandfather’s nearby home at the time of the crash.
“There was nothing anybody could have done,” Vela said. “The jury said she came back as immediately as one could under the circumstances.”Officials with the Harris County District Attorney's Office on Thursday addressed the acquittal.
