That was how my mother gently eased us into the chaos of preparing for the new year.
In the weeks leading up to the holiday, my sisters and I would scarf down sweet glutinous rice cakes that had been dipped in egg and fried, and a savory turnip cake filled with dried shrimp, Chinese fermented sausage, and shiitake mushrooms. It was the most delicious time of the year, and we headed to school each morning with greasy mouths and satisfied bellies, knowing there was still more cake to be eaten.
These cakes offer a variety of textures; some are chewy and made with sticky rice flour, while others made with non-glutinous rice flour are slightly firmer. The cakes we ate were never homemade; like clockwork, my mother placed an order at a local bakery each year, a month before the new year.
