Earl has gained hurricane strength in the western Atlantic and become the 2nd of the season.
Winds, as of the 8 p.m. advisory, were at least 80 mph, right near the center, and the central pressure was down to 983 mb — that’s a very significant 12 hour drop of 16 mb. Strangely, that was due to some overnight weakening.
Just 24 hours ago, Earl appeared to be intensifying, as the central pressure had dropped to 990 mb. Yet he weakened to see the pressure rise to 990 mb by sunrise Tuesday. Remember, tropical cyclones are areas of low pressure — the lower the central pressure, the higher the winds.Earl may undergo rapid intensification over the next 24-36 hours. That means Earl could become a major hurricane by Thursday.
