A clearer picture of the variant's impacts is still weeks away:

patients hospitalized with Covid-19 did not require supplemental oxygen, few went on to develop pneumonia or be admitted to intensive care and the average stay on the Covid ward was significantly shorter than the average over the last 18 months , according to data from a group of hospitals in South Africa’s Gauteng Province, where the variant was first identified.

The observations from Norway and South Africa are both preliminary and from very early days of the omicron outbreak, andagainst jumping to conclusions. More data will be needed and there are many other factors that could possibly account for reports of less severe disease. South Africa, for example, has a relatively young population and a high rate of previous coronavirus infection, both of which could influence disease severity.
