Wells-Barnett was so horrified by the lynching of Frazier Baker,, that she traveled to the White House to urge President William McKinley to take federal action.

“Nowhere in the civilized world save the U.S. of America do men, possessing all civil and political power, go out in bands of 50 and 5,000 to hunt down, shoot, hang or burn to death a single individual, unarmed and absolutely powerless,” Wells wrote to McKinley.Wells-Barnett’s lobbying didn’t stop with McKinley. She also pushed Congress to enact a national anti-lynching law.
