Editorial: Bring Brittney Griner home — and then pay her morethan Russia ever could.

United States' Brittney Griner , center, drives Japan's Maki Takada during women's basketball gold medal game at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021, in Saitama, Japan. She led all players in scoring, played longer than anyone on her team, and made more than 63 percent of her shots. She nailed all her free throws, got seven rebounds and blocked a shot. Somehow, it wasn’t enough for a championship.

It’s unclear if the accusations against Griner have any merit. It’s not even certain when last month she was detained. No doubt the unconscionable Russian invasion of Ukraine has made it tougher for the U.S. to secure her release. And it’s possible that the more media attention her detention receives, the easier it is for Putin to use her as a bargaining chip.

Still, we can’t help but wonder how the situation would be different, how the outcry from the Americans would be deafening, if we were clamoring for the return of a prominent male athlete — God forbid, a legend as revered as Tom Brady or LeBron James. SportsWe can almost hear the endless “Bring LeBron home” chants that would ring through NBA arenas and the White House lawn until he was pried from the clutches of the Kremlin.
