One item that leaps out from Mealer’s reports is the pair of $100,000 donations from the Defend Texas Liberty Political Action Committee. This PAC is funded almost entirely by Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks, who made their fortunes in oil exploration and fracking and have donated lavishly to far-right candidates for the Texas Legislature and statewide offices.
State Sen. Kel Seliger, a Republican from Amarillo who has clashed with Dunn and Wilks over school vouchers, told us that their support for Mealer and other local candidates is a predictable effort to expand their influence. “They perceive correctly that the grass roots grow up,” said Seliger, who is not seeking re-election. “I think they’re looking at influencing elected bodies up and down the ballot.
Admirably, Hidalgo has declined to accept contributions from county vendors, a groundbreaking step. We’d like to see the same commitment from Mealer and frankly, all members of the county’s governing body. Instead, Mealer said she has another strategy for avoiding conflicts of interest: “I have pledged never to serve on a contract selection committee.” She added, “I have no intention of changing flood control rules” in response to pressure from developers or anyone else.
