Editorial: Rice's whale is a rare Gulf treasure -- one endangered by oil drilling

Even among a species with its own complex sonic syntax, the call of a Rice's whale, much like the creature itself, is wholly unique. While many whales communicate at levels that aren't audible to human ears, the Rice's whale emits a sound that you would be able to hear, or even feel, if you encountered it somewhere out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Unfortunately, rampant human activity in the Gulf, mostly from oil and gas drilling, has drowned out the whale's calls, damaged its habitats, and jeopardized its chances of recovering and thriving. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill aloneSeismic oil and gas exploration adds an overwhelming cacophony to its acoustic environment. The whale's relatively shallow resting depth leaves it vulnerable to vessel strikes. Even our own trash can be devastating.
