From the Editorial Board: The Midwest has suffered from smoke-filled air but also from an ongoing drought. The impact is considerable.

The sun, muted from Canadian wildfire smoke, sets behind a water tower on Chicago's North Side, June 30, 2023.We were pleased to see the unfamiliar sight of water falling from the Midwest skies in recent days. For one thing, it can only help to clear out the smoke from Canadian wildfires that has cast a pall over Chicago and created a serious health emergency.

This year started on a promising note as farmers took advantage of dry soil to complete spring planting earlier than usual. Low-moisture conditions in April and May can help crops establish strong roots and ultimately improve yields — hence the adage, “Plant in the dust and your bins will bust.” Illinois hasn’t experienced a severe drought since 2012, and while this spring was worse than the same period 11 years ago, there is still time for the crop to rebound: July is the key month for corn, and August for soybeans.

To date, the local effects of drought this year have been limited. Some Chicago suburbs have imposed water restrictions, allowing residents to water outside only on certain days, and forbidding any watering at night. Water-starved lawns have been going dormant, and weeds are starting to grow faster than the grass.
