Restrictions on the aquifer, which can affect residential watering rules, have changed again due to improved water levels.
For the second time in less than three weeks, and likely not for the last time this summer, the Edwards Aquifer Authority has changed its restrictions on water pumping — but this time, it's because conditions have improved. The authority manages how much water is pumped from the Edwards Aquifer, a limestone cavern system that spans more than 3,000 miles and provides water for more than 2 million people.
Who is ‘Edwards,’ anyway? 5 things to know about the Edwards Aquifer The aquifer authority said the conditions that trigger a move to Stage 3 were met at both Comal Springs, which had a 10-day average flow rate above 100 cubic feet per second, and at the J-17 index well in Bexar County, which had a 10-day rolling average of 633 feet. The threshold for Stage 4 is 630 feet or less in that well.
‘Desperately needed update’: San Antonio adopts new, tougher drought rules A new high-use surcharge will take effect in July if SAWS remains in Stage 3. That fee will apply to residential customers who use more than 20,000 gallons per month starting after July 6. The delay in enforcing the new rules is necessary because SAWS needs to provide public notice of the new fees. Other area utilities have remained in Stage 2, even as the aquifer authority moved into Stage 3, then Stage 4.
