Elon Musk bars Twitter employees from the company's offices in the run up to layoffs, unless staff are working on one of his 'critical' projects
More than 3,700 employees are on a list to be let go, as Insider reported. While Twitter workers have been expecting layoffs to occur since Musk officially took over last week, the office closures outlined in the email came as a surprise to some. And the offices were closed immediately after the email was sent, three employees told Insider. They asked not to be identified discussing private matters.
Just before 6 pm PT on Thursday, office security began"sweeps" of offices in San Francisco and New York, the people said, to ensure that employees were gone or leaving and that none were staying the night, as some have taken to doing to keep up with Musk's new demands. Throughout the evening, employees flooded the company Slack with blue hearts, signifying love for Twitter colleagues, and the"salute" emoji, according to two employees and messages seen by Insider.
