Will Smith is getting lots of praise for his performance in Emancipation, but early reviews say the film falls short of his acting achievement.

Early reviews for the Will Smith film Emancipation have arrived, and critics praise his performance despite their mixed reactions to the film itself. Emancipation is the first time that Smith has collaborated with director Antoine Fuqua, who has helmed films like The Equalizer, Southpaw, and 2016's The Magnificent Seven.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Ahead of the official release of Emancipation, the embargo has lifted on reviews, allowing critics to share their full thoughts on the film. The critics are thoroughly mixed, though most agree that Fuqua has chosen to highlight popcorn movie filmmaking that undermines the tone of the serious and real narrative at the center of the film. Many have also praised Smith's performance, which anchors the film with an understated gravity.

There is also the matter of the controversy that arose the last time Smith was in attendance at the Academy Awards. At this year's ceremony, when Chris Rock came onstage to present the award for Documentary Feature , he made a G.I Jane joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, which is a result of her diagnosis with alopecia.

Technically, Smith could still be nominated for Best Actor for Emancipation, which is his first released film performance since the slap, even though he would be banned from attending the ceremony or accepting his Oscar onstage. However, it seems likely that Academy voters would be too skittish about courting controversy to consider making such a bold move.
