With Ricky Gervais’ “SuperNature,” Netflix has released another comedy special with transphobic material.
Gervais makes clear in his special that he expects such outrage.“I talk about AIDS, famine, cancer, the Holocaust, rape, pedophilia, but no, the one thing you mustn’t joke about is identity politics,” says Gervais. “The one thing you should never joke about is the trans issue. ‘They just want to be treated equally.’ I agree. That’s why I include them.”

“I support all human rights, and trans rights are human rights,” says Gervais. “Live your best life. Use your preferred pronouns. Be the gender that you feel that you are. But meet me halfway, ladies. Lose the c—. That’s all I’m saying.”, as if to prevent any repeat of the fallout following “The Closer,” Netflix added new language in its staff guidelines around company culture.
“Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles you perceive to be harmful,” the guidelines state. “If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you.”
