The U.S. Justice Department has blamed Beijing for the 2017 Equifax breach. If China was behind the hack, it’s a wake-up call for firms that may not have thought they were espionage targets, writes GinaChon.

The U.S. Justice Department has charged four Chinese military personnel with the 2017 hack of Equifax credit reporting agency, which affected almost 150 million Americans. Vulnerable information included Social Security numbers, birth dates and driver's license data, in addition to information about consumer debt.

Attorney General William Barr compared the attack to other examples of China’s “voracious appetite for the personal data of Americans,” including the theft of records from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and hacking incidents at hotel group Marriott International and health insurer Anthem.
