Defenseman Erik Johnson remembers the wise words of Dan Hinote.
Johnson averaged 25:26 in ice time in 2017-18 and led the NHL in shifts-per-game . But he is now a third-pairing guy and primary penalty killer. He was benched midway through the Jan. 26 game against Boston after taking an undisciplined penalty on the penalty kill. He logged just 9:52 on Monday at the New York Islanders.
“His buy-in has been amazing,” said Avs coach Jared Bednar. “We rely on him heavily to play a real strong defensive game. We want him to be physical down there, we want his details to be tight, and he’s bought into that. He understands that. But since Johnson committed the short-handed cross-checking minor on Boston’s Taylor Hall in retaliation for Hall’s dangerous check on MacKinnon, he’s no longer worn that letter. It went to superstar defenseman Cale Makar, 23, when MacKinnon or Landeskog is not in the lineup.
