EU imposes sanctions on Russian private military contractor Wagner Group, accusing it of fomenting violence and committing human rights abuses in the Middle East, Africa and Ukraine

Three entities linked to the Wagner Group that the EU said were involved in oil and gas production in Syria were also hit with sanctions.

Wagner was targeted with an asset freeze, along with eight individuals and three firms, diplomats said on Monday, accusing the group of working on behalf of the Kremlin in conflict zones. Among those targeted, the EU blacklisted Dimitriy Utkin, a former Russian military intelligence officer, saying he was the founder of the Wagner Group and responsible for "coordinating and planning operations for the deployment of Wagner Group mercenaries in Ukraine".
