January temperatures reached an all-time high in several European states, with national records set in at least seven countries. Northern Spanish city Bilbao logged 24.9 degrees Celsius on New Year's Day — temperatures that might typically be expected at the start of July. Switzerland experienced 20 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
