Evanston would be the first city in Illinois to convert to an election system that allows voters to rank candidates instead of picking just one for seats in municipal races, with more 80% of voters supporting the change, unofficial vote totals late Tuesday show.
In a rank choice voting system, also known as instant runoff voting, if one candidate wins at least 50% of the vote, they are declared the winner. In the event that there isn’t a majority, the last-place candidate is dropped, and votes cast for that person would be redistributed to the voter’s second choice. This process repeats until one of the candidates ends up with the majority.
The Evanston City Council will need to act quickly to be ready for the 2025 municipal election, Reid said.
