Matt Smith as Daemon with Vermithor in House of the Dragon
Quick Links It’s safe to say that there is much more dragon content coming from HBO. Although Game of Thrones fans had to wait until Season 5 to see Daenerys Targaryen ride a dragon, the House of the Dragon pilot “Heirs of the Dragon” opened with a sweeping shot of one of Westeros’ winged creatures flying through King’s Landing indicating that we would be seeing our fair share of dragons and dragon riders.
Release Date August 21, 2022 Creator Ryan J. Condal, George R.R. Martin Cast Paddy Considine , Olivia Cooke , Rhys Ifans , Matt Smith , Eve Best , Steve Toussaint , Emma D'Arcy , Milly Alcock , Emily Carey Main Genre Drama Seasons 4 Distributor HBO Expand Syrax House of the Dragon Season 1 opens by giving us exactly what we wanted to see: Rhaenyra riding her yellow-scaled dragon Syrax over the city as she flies to the dragon pit in King's Landing.
Vhagar Close Vhagar’s first appearance in the series was highly anticipated by readers of George R.R. Martin’s novels. At over a century old, Vhagar is one of the oldest and the largest dragon living at the time of House of the Dragon. Vhagar was first ridden by the Queen Visenya Targaryen, one of Aegon the Conquerer's sister wives. After her, Vhagar was ridden by Viserys' father, Baelon. After Baelon, Vhagar went for some time without being ridden, and it wasn't clear where he was.
Also referred to as “The Black Dread,” Balerion’s wingspan would cover an entire town. In his prime, Balerion was far larger than Game of Thrones’ Drogon, and only the fully grown Vhagar will match him in size. Balerion was the last dragon descended from Old Valyria before it was destroyed in a volcanic blast. Although Balerion has been long dead by the time of House of the Dragon, this isn’t the first time that his hulking skull has appeared on-screen.
Moondancer Moondancer is Baela Targaryen's dragon, and in the TV series, the dragon is born to her. Both in the show and in the novel that originated it, Moondancer has pale green skin. The dragon only appears in House of the Dragon Season 2, as Baela begins to have more of a presence by Rhaenyra's side as a supporter of the Blacks in the fight for the Iron Throne.
Vermithor By the end of Season 1, Vermithor shows up briefly when Daemon attempts to wake him for the battle ahead. The dragon has been retired ever since the death of his rider, King Jahaerys. Nearly 100 years old during the events taking place in Season 2, Vermithor would make for a worthwhile ally to the Blacks. Although the dragon remains riderless, Jacerys does mention to his mother that maybe there might be a dragonseed who could claim him and ride him to battle.
