Super Mario Bros. Wonder has an appealing roster of playable characters, but one key downside makes the lineup much less exciting than it could be.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Super Mario Bros. Wonder includes a strong variety of playable characters, but one key aspect of their implementation seems likely to lead to disappointment when selecting any option in-game. Following up on the New Super Mario Bros. series that started on the Nintendo DS, Super Mario Bros. Wonder represents a fresh approach to 2D side-scrollers, building on the plumber's original legacy.

The full roster of characters available in New Super Mario Bros. Wonder includes unsurprising mainstays like Mario and Luigi, but some of the options available are less frequently seen. In total, the playable crew consists of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, and Nabbit, offering something for just about everyone.

In the case of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the decision to have every character play the same flattens some past distinctions out of existence. Luigi moving like Mario is one obvious example, although there's precedent for that particular decision in a number of titles. Princess Peach's classic floating jump is gone, although she can use the Parachute Cap to achieve a similar effect as any other character.

For anyone excited to finally get a chance to play Yoshi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, this may be a somewhat disappointing choice, as there doesn't appear to be any way to play the character and still receive the normal level of challenge throughout the game. Yoshi does feature his signature flutter kick and elastic tongue, making it so that only an invulnerable character can offer a different experience on the character level.

Although eight different playable characters in Super Mario Bros. Wonder is no sum to sneeze at, it's difficult to muster the same excitement for a Princess Daisy that's slated to move in exactly the same way as Mario himself. The visual variety should still freshen up co-op to some degree, but when prior games like Super Mario 3D World managed to do a lot more with unique characters, the lack of mechanics in that regard is underwhelming.
