After elections department quits, volunteers rally around Gillespie County clerk
April Wilke, independent candidate for Gillespie County district clerk, waves to potential voters from the back of her truck as early voting starts Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, in Fredericksburg.FREDERICKSBURG — Her daughter was running a fever of 102 degrees, but Gillespie County Clerk Lindsey Brown had an election to run. So she found herself darting back and forth: out of the room to check on her little one, then back to the training she was running for poll workers.
Amid the run-up to Nov. 8, Brown did not respond to several interview requests from the Express-News, but it’s clear she’s had her hands full.If she didn’t have enough on her plate already, she’s running for re-election herself. But she didn’t draw a challenger, so at least there’s that. After the training ended, Brown spoke with volunteers expressing their gratitude while her daughter, occasionally moaning in discomfort, leaned against her mother’s leg for support.
“People are bending over backward to make sure that everyone feels that this is going to be an open and fair and just election,” Fontenot said. Veteran poll workers often jumped in to address potential Election Day hiccups or even correct a speaker’s minor mistake. It was a familiar group, and Brown often called the volunteers by their first names. One poll worker attended a session with a large drink tumbler bearing the words, “Gillespie County Elections.”
“ want an honest, fair, transparent election,” Schmidt said. “I think that really, if everybody trusts the vote, then you’re not going to have the disruption that we’ve seen recently.” Abel Jaimes, 21, is a Fredericksburg native voting in his second election, but it’s his first time casting a ballot in Gillespie County.
