In a plea agreement signed Tuesday, prosecutors will seek no more than 13 years in prison for the council member's role in a bribery case that involved developers.Former Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar pleaded guilty Friday to two federal charges stemming from a sweeping City Hall corruption case. with prosecutors, who accuse him of taking $1.5 million in bribes from developers.
Huizar entered the plea to racketeering conspiracy and tax evasion Friday in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. Sentencing was scheduled for April 3. He faces a sentence of up to 25 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. "I want to apologize to my family, constituents, and to the City of Los Angeles," Huizar said in a statement."My actions were not acceptable, and I will accept the consequences for my actions. It is time for healing. My family needs some healing, and I hope that my acceptance of responsibility will allow the city to heal from the harm that my actions have caused."
