Federal prosecutors have charged Gary Jones, the former head of the UAW, in a corruption probe.

The charges, which accuse Jones of conspiring to embezzle union funds, among other things, were unsealed Thursday.

Jones resigned in disgrace last year after he was implicated in federal court papers that said he was one of several top union officials who had embezzled more than a million dollars and spent it on meals, cigars and other lavish goodies. The case has led to more than a dozen charges or convictions, and raised the prospect of a federal takeover of a union once known for its clean reputation.Contact Eric D. Lawrence: [email protected].
