A lifelong activist, Brown had many conversations with the Haslams about social justice issues and how they should be thinking about them. They supported his Amer-I-Can organization to rehabilitate gang members and disenfranchised youth, and relied on his wisdom and expertise.

The feeling was mutual, “but it’s hard to get a lot out of Nick so we may never know,” Jimmy said with a laugh. In December 2022, with Brown declining, the Browns named their annual community service award for individuals in Northeast Ohio “The Inspire Change Jim Brown Changemaker Award” in honor of Brown’s tireless service.
“We knew he wasn’t well, and we were fortunate to spend about an hour with Jim and Monique and their two kids ,” Dee said. “Aris, their son, is actually interning with us this summer. It’s a family that we’re close to and care about.”“He was clearly not the man was and you could tell that his days might be limited, but as Dee said, it was a great chance to visit with him,” Jimmy said.“He was always encouraging, even when things were really bad,” Dee said.
