The flood detention component of a $43 million project in Clear Lake that includes greenspace and trails is nearing completion.that is being transformed into detention ponds that double as wetlands.
When completed, the detention facility will be able to handle 500 million gallons of floodwater that otherwise could go into people’s homes. Above the ponds, native grasses and shrubs are planted that thrive in the local ecosystem. Native trees are planted along the rim of the basin that includes the pond. A hike-and-bike trail winds past the ponds.“We have two years left for the big plantings, and then it will be maintenance going forward from there,” said Rich Sommer, vice chairman of the Exploration Green Conservancy board.
“We have a variety of other interesting native grasses that have become established, like little bluestem, bushy bluestem and silver bluestem.”
