Be wary when anyone asks for your credit card or personal information over the phone.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Newscenter Fairbanks has been notified that some of our viewers have been the target of phone scams recently circulating our area.
The first scam is a Medicare scam. The caller pretends to be from Medicare and tells you that you need to renew or upgrade your Medicare card. The fraudsters are trying to trick you into sharing your Medicare or social security number. In a second scam, the caller states they are calling from Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and demand payment on an overdue account. If you get a call like this the best thing to do is hang up and call the hospital yourself. Don’t use the number on your caller id to call back. Look up the number on the internet, phone book or a bill to be sure you are calling a legitimate number.
Most importantly, do not give out your Medicare number or social security number to anyone on the phone when you did not initiate the call. These numbers should be protected just like you would protect your credit card, debit card, or bank account information. It is important to know that Medicare will not call you unless you have specifically asked for help and if they do call you in response to a request, they will not need your information since they will already have it on file.
