After one week in theaters, FantasticBeasts 3 is projected to lose the top spot at the box office to DreamWorks' new animated comedy TheBadGuys
The DreamWorks animated film The Bad Guys is projected to topple Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore from its perch at #1 in the domestic box office this weekend. The Bad Guys, which opened in the U.S. on April 22, 2022, is loosely adapted from the Aaron Blabey children's book series of the same name. The film follows a version of the Big Bad Wolf who leads a gang of criminal animals as they attempt to become good guys.
Meanwhile, Fantastic Beasts 3, which opened on Easter weekend, is struggling to achieve the success of its Wizarding World forebears. Although the Fantastic Beasts movies, which are Harry Potter prequels following magizoologist Newt Scamander , have never achieved the success of the original franchise, the new entry opened $19 million lower than the previous lowest-performing film.
This doesn't necessarily mean that The Bad Guys is a success, however. The expensive animated film reportedly had a budget of $70 million, presumably because of its all-star voice cast. The movie will have to have strong staying power if it hopes to earn back its budget domestically. Luckily for DreamWorks, the family-friendly film is already exceeding expectations and will have little competition in the coming weeks as the summer blockbuster season officially kicks off.
The Bad Guys is definitely overperforming from projections, but this slot could have belonged to Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore if it had any box office legs. That doesn't seem to be the case, especially since odds are looking likely that Sonic 2 will bump it down to third even though it's been in theaters longer.
