Burying a charcoal-like material in fields might help remove CO2 from the atmosphere and improve soil health at the same time – and the largest trial of the idea is now underway

Farmers in England are starting to bury a charcoal-like material in their fields to see if it could offer a new large-scale way of putting the brakes on climate change. Biochar is the carbon-rich material left over from burning wood and other biomass at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment. Most of its use today is at the small scale, such as gardeners using it as a fertiliser.
