Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge workers and a visiting nurse tried to help the 21-year-old victim while other employees restrained the 33-year-old suspect, according to court documents filed with murder charges.
Monday morning as he ate breakfast in a restaurant with other employees nearby who ended up trying to help the victim as others restrained the suspect, charges say.
There are two restaurants, a coffee shop and bar in the 460-room lodge located in Denali State Park at Mile 133 of the Parks Highway. The criminal charges filed this week didn’t provide any information about what might have led to the stabbing. Melendez told investigators only that he wanted to talk to an attorney, the affidavit said.
One described an “odd look in his eyes” and said he “just stared at him for several seconds,” Hawkins wrote, while another said Melendez tapped her on the shoulder and told her he was “good” when she asked how he was doing.That employee saw him walk to where Torres-Ayala was eating, which was when the employee said she heard screaming and saw Melendez stab Torres-Ayala, according to the affidavit.
