Investigators say a note on the suspect's phone detailed plans to attack an East Lansing synagogue.
The FBI alleges Seann Pietila, 19, was planning to attack an East Lansing synagogue. A search warrant found weapons, gear and a note on Pietila's iPhone with plans for a mass shooting. Chippewa County, MI -- The FBI arrested an Upper Peninsula man Friday, June 16 after investigators say he threatened a mass shooting at an East Lansing synagogue.
“Antisemitic threats and violence against our Jewish communities – or any other group for that matter – will not be tolerated in the Western District of Michigan,” said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten in a statement. “Today and every day we take all credible threats seriously. I’m incredibly grateful to the FBI for their swift action to identify and arrest Pietela .”The FBI started investigating after receiving a report of “threatening communications” through Instagram on June 13.
Pietila described having “11ish” guns across multiple properties including an AR-15. He told the teen he would be “strapped with mags so I don’t have ammo problems” and thought about using the social platform Discord to livestream the attack, according to the complaint. Investigators also found Pietila’s Pinterest account which included posts of Nazi imagery, Tarrant and Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian far-right extremist who massacred 77 people in 2011, the complaint alleges.
