As unprecedented numbers of Omicron subvariants continue to fuel a new coronavirus wave, there is growing alarm about long COVID, in which symptoms or increased risk of illness can persist for months or even years.
While more than 1 million people in the U.S. have died from COVID, many more have survived ICU stays that have left them with a host of health issues.

For instance, those with persistent shortness of breath might undergo pulmonary rehabilitation, which is typically used for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In some instances, physical therapy and acupuncture have helped patients with muscle pain. In some cases, antidepressants can help clear brain fog, Viswanathan said, suggesting the condition may be caused by a hormonal imbalance in the brain. Other times, patients must learn how to live with brain fog, such as making lists, pacing themselves and letting others know of plans.
