A B-17 World War II bomber and a C-17 Globemaster will be on display this Saturday.
This B-17 World War II era bomber, also called the Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey, will be showcased at the Festival of Flight this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Long Beach Airport. The Long Beach Airport is about to turn 100, and organizers of the yearly Festival of Flight have lined up a special show to display several historic aircrafts built in the city, among them one of only four in the world still active manufactured for combat during World War II.
“It’s challenging to get these military aircrafts to our event,” said Kate Kuykendall, Long Beach Airport’s Public Information Officer. “It was really special we were able to get it this year.” The C-17 Globemaster III is also a large military plane manufactured by McDonnell Douglas/Boeing the U.S. Air Force used in famous operations, such as in the evacuations of personnel and civilians from Afghanistan in August 2021, and during the Iraq War from 2003 through 2011, also called Operation Iraqi Freedom.“We are definitely excited by the B-17. We are also very excited by the C-17. It is a huge massive aircraft for people to check its belly,” said Kuykendall.
The airport’s 100th anniversary will be officially marked on Nov. 26. Saturday’s festival is expected to attract as many as 15,000 visitors, according to Kuykendall. Free parking will be available starting at 9 a.m. on the parking lot located at East Wardlow Road and Globemaster Way.
