We don't mean to sound like our dads, but those graphics are 👌
For many if not most of us, the Gran Turismo series is an integral part of our car obsession. For the past 25 years it’s taught us about circuits, techniques and even manufacturers we hadn’t heard of. In a pre-internet age, GT opened up the fascinating world of the Japanese Domestic Market to eager young gamers.
But, of course, we knew the graphics would be awesome, because that’s been a calling card of Gran Turismo since forever. And the latest PS5 is an incredibly capable console. Perhaps what’s most exciting about the latest preview, however, are the lengths Yamauchi and his team have gone to with GT7 in an attempt to create another generation of car nuts.
New features include a ‘Café’ with ‘Menu Books’ to be completed - bear with - which will explain the significance of newly acquired cars, complete with input from the actual designers. A ‘Museum’ section offers players the opportunity to get the full lowdown on their chosen manufacturer, and a ‘Legendary Car Dealership’ will feature “rare and iconic cars with high historical value”. These will include GT favourites from days gone by, as well as European and American classics.
As for the rest of the game, expect the fastidious attention to detail that’s characterised the franchise for the past quarter of a century. In this deep-dive video, for example, Yamauchi proudly proclaims that the game simulates the process of real-life cloud formation, meaning a sky will change differently depending on which part of the world you’re racing in.
Add that to licence tests that still begin with a Mazda Demio, 34 race locations with 90 layouts , physics feedback from drivers including Lewis Hamilton plus more than 400 cars from 60 manufacturers - including the- and even non-fans might start to get it. But you’re not reading this as a non-fan; you’re as excited as us.
