Mike Finger: ‘Looking for trouble,’ Spurs’ Jeremy Sochan making his mark

Spurs rookie Jeremy Sochan dunks on Grizzlies center Steven Adams in a game in which he also threw the veteran tough guy to the floor.SAN ANTONIO — In a crumpled heap at the base of an AT&T Center basket stanchion, the mountain of a man chosen three times as the toughest player in the NBA took his time getting up.

The truth is, Sochan and Adams share more than a bit of lingo. And as the Spurs’ spunky 19-year-old keeps growing more comfortable being himself a month into his role as an NBA starter, the rest of the league is starting to learn what Adams did. But what stood out on his game tape from Baylor — where he came off the bench for much of his only college season — was the way he made his presence felt even when he wasn’t handling the ball. And it wasn’t just one type of opposing player who felt this way.

But when the Clippers’ Paul George scored 32 points against the Spurs last week, some of the details were telling. Although George, a seven-time All-Star, won his share of mini-showdowns with the rookie, the Clippers made a concerted effort to get their star player away from Sochan. The Bulls didn’t much like it when DeMar DeRozan was guarded by him either.

That’s always Sochan’s aim, just as it was in Wednesday’s overtime loss to the Grizzlies. He didn’t look intimidated on the occasions when he switched onto transcendent point guard Ja Morant, and he didn’t back down when he tangled with Adams — a perennial winner of the title of “league’s toughest player” in the NBA’s general manager survey — under the basket.
