The band is comprised of Finn and drummer Malcolm Craig, who played with him in their previous band Calpurnia. Finn and Malcolm have been playing together for years; according tothe two starred in a 2014 music video together and started jamming together shortly after, then formed Calpurnia. Calpurnia released an EP, but balancing music and acting proved to be difficult, and the band eventually split. “It got to the point where I was so unhappy doing it,”“The music part should be the fun part of my life. There’s no point in doing it if it’s not fun.”
After the breakup, Finn and Malcolm kept jamming together and eventually formed The Aubreys. “Initially our band was called the Audreys and that was because it was named after a childhood cat that I had,” Finn explained to. “But there’s another band called the Audreys, so we just swapped the ‘d’ with the ‘b’ and we thought it just sounded cool. And we kind of created these alternate versions of ourselves named Aubrey and Aubrey.
Finn said things will be different for The Aubreys than they were with Calpurnia, with far less pressure to do it all. “The only people [Craig and I] have to answer to are ourselves,” he told“That’s a really great thing. There’s no pressure to put out a song. There’s no pressure to write a song. It’s just fun releasing music again. It’s much more an organic thing.”
