The building was located in the area of Sunset Avenue and East Street.

CONCORD — A two-alarm fire that started late Monday and burned into early Tuesday gutted a three-story commercial building that fire officials said was vacant.Foul play ruled out in man’s death at East Bay fire scene

Fire crews searched the building and did not find anybody injured, according to Capt. Chris Toler, a spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. They plan to search it again after the fire is completely extinguished, he said. The fire broke out about 10:30 p.m. at the building in the area of Sunset Avenue and East Street in the downtown area, Toler said. Firefighters saw flames and heavy smoke from the building when they arrived.

After their initial search, crews reverted to fighting the fire from the outside of the building, Toler said. The intensity of the flames and smoke forced firefighters outside. It took about 2½ hours to knock down the fire, according to fire officials. Tolder said several parts of the building both inside and outside of it collapsed during the fire, as did part of the roof.

According to police, Clayton Road was closed at Oakland Avenue and Grant Street, and Park Street also was closed at Grant. Concord Boulevard was closed at Colfax and East streets, and First Street at Sinclair Avenue also was shut down.Toler said crews will be at the scene for several hours cleaning up and keeping the fire from flaring up again.
