, spreading at an alarming rate through the parched foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

The map above shows where the fire started on Friday near the small community of Midpines, roughly 9 miles northeast of the county seat, Mariposa, and 20 miles south of Yosemite's gateway of El Portal. At 15,603 acres, the Oak Fire is the largest wildfire in California right now and the biggest fire in the state since the start of 2022. Baking temperatures, low humidity, strong winds and dry vegetation and dead trees have led to fire behavior that firefighters are calling unprecedented.

"It is, by far in my 30 years in the U.S. Forest Service, some of the most extreme behavior I've seen, including fires up and down the state," said Mike Van Loben Sels, a unit fire chief with Cal Fire, on Sunday night. Cal Fire fire engines navigate Triangle Road as the Oak Fire moves through the area on July 23, 2022 near Mariposa, California.Over 3,800 residents have evacuated due to the blaze, including in the community of Jerseydale and the Lushmeadows subdivision in Mariposa. Cal Fire estimated 2,693 structures are threatened and 10 structures have been destroyed and five damaged.
