Hu originally planned to go into banking before a Northwestern Mutual managing director told him that in banking you help corporations do well but in financial planning you help people do well.
He eventually got involved in leadership, becoming a managing director and building an office in Chinatown in New York City, which was “the first district office for the company that was intentional about serving the minority community,” according to Hu.Joining the industry at such a young age, he didn’t understand all that a financial professional could do but was passionate about serving the minority community from which he came.
“As great as many of the financial services firms are in our industry, the minority community, specifically the Asian community, is extremely underserved,” Hu says. “My competitive advantage is being able to help serve minorities by understanding where they come from and providing opportunity by simplifying financial products and literacy to help them understand all the moving pieces of financial planning.
“We have weathered many storms in the past, that is proven,” Hu adds. “If we do a great job in our planning process we will continue to weather storms in the future.”What really keeps Hu up at night is wondering what more he could have done.Hu is a fan of “The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness” by Morgan Housel.
